What Methods Do You Use To Source Candidates In A Down Market

By Cade Krueger

It can be a huge challenge to find success in a down economy because it becomes emotionally difficult for a lot of people to keep their heads on straight as recruiters. Most will cave in and not use this time to their advantage. There are several things you can do to make a difference in your recruiting.

Probably one of the smartest things you can do is institute a 80/20 rule with your personal work and managerial work. If you are a manager you should do what you can to keep your top 20% and renew their contracts during a difficult time to prove your loyalty. Second you need to drop your bottom 10% and look to fill them with people that will at least be in the middle group or potentially someone else's top 20%.

The middle 70% you need to be very careful with because each situation is going to have to be taken care of on an individual basis to find out exactly what works and will not during this recession. Often effort can go unnoticed so it becomes important to carefully view what each person does with their time during and outside of work.

If you don't have managerial responsibilities, you do have personal responsibilities you need to take care of and these same rules apply. You have to analyze with a fine tooth comb what works and what is wasting your time. It is amazing when you map out exactly what your day is filled with and what you actually get done.

Look to train and make improvements in your strategies and look for ways to train out of the box during non work hours. If your are a front line recruiter then be smart about your efforts and use your day time to really focus on phone calls and evening on emails and training.

You need to also start planning your hiring needs by the quarter for all of your major positions that you need to fill. If you do this then it will be a good example for all of the line managers who can implement similar tactics by updating their quarterly agenda and follow that up with quarterly tracking.

The most important thing is that you need to find time to use online advertising tools like Entice Labs and Jobs2Web to attract your ideal customers. The more you do this the better chance you will have of finding the ideal candidates and decrease your cost per hire in a difficult marketing period.

Keep your head on straight and use this time as a chance to cut out the unnecessary areas of your recruiting that are holding you back. You can still create a lot of success in a down market. - 16651
