Compact Digital Camera Reviews: What's Real and What's not?

By Evan Heelie

So you want to buy a camera. A compact, digital camera. Reviews to help you make the right choice are plastered all over the internet, but a good percentage of these were done for the sake of selling you the camera. How do you know who to trust, and who not? On the internet, it seems as if everybody is an expert......

Firstly, stay away from "reviews" connected to the manufacturer. Any manufacturer would like you to believe in the supremacy of their products, so the review will consist of a list of praises. The "review" is no more than a thinly disguised sales pitch, and is simply a list of features and benefits.

However, don't just leave the site if you spot a link to a product, or sales page. Setting up a website does involve time and money, so you can expect the webmaster to try and recover some of it through sales commissions. What you should be careful of, is all links pointing to the website of a single manufacturer. The reviews are likely to be biased, withholding negative information that might cause them to lose the deal.

But you need to find credible compact digital camera reviews. Where do you go? Go out in search of photographic journals, and comparison sites. You could even go buy a computer, or photographic magazine. Here you will find reviews done by professional photographers, people who have proven their credibility. They have standard procedures for conducting evaluations, ensuring objective reviews.

A "real" review does not hold back. It does not minimize the disadvantages, or shortcomings of the product. A real review will employ a standard checklist to compare performance and features, being brutally honest about each point. Unless the camera reviewed is something out of this world (probably costing a fortune), there will probably be room for improvement. You will find out about any problems, and all the limitations of the product.

Ultimately, it's your money, so it's your choice. Whatever you buy has to deliver on your expectations. The market is flooded with choices, but unfortunately it's also flooded with "junk reviews". To be able to make an educated choice, you need to find a website that offers real compact digital camera reviews, allowing you to compare facts that matter. Having accomplished this, you will be able to walk into your local photographic store, and simply waive the sales pitch. You know what you want. - 16651
